A beautiful story that can teach children about the nature of God. By Alberto and Patricia Rosenthal

Reading time: 3 minutes

Recently we had a wonderful experience on a Friday. We then began the Sabbath very happily. What happened? Through the balcony door I saw a butterfly fluttering strangely on the ground. I went out and leaned down to see that he was struggling with sticky cobwebs. They threatened to destroy one of its wings. An area of the fine antennae was also affected. The little animal couldn't possibly free itself and would certainly die.

I wanted to help, but the butterfly fluttered away on the ground and wouldn't let me get to it. Then someone called me and I had to leave the place for a few moments. When I returned, I looked anxiously for the little creature. There he was! A little more exhausted. But he was alive!

I knelt down in front of him and prayed to God: "Please, LORD, give me a very steady hand and let the butterfly behave calmly! Help me clear the cobwebs from him!” Then I carefully got to work. I grabbed the webs and began to carefully remove the threads from the affected wing. And lo and behold, after an initial flutter, the little animal was completely calm! The butterfly suddenly seemed to realize that there was a way out for him.

It was extraordinary! Like a patient who trusts his doctor, he now waited peacefully for what would follow. I was amazed and deeply touched. Quite unexpectedly, I was able to recognize God's presence in this beautiful insect. This made me very quiet myself. I moved forward carefully, with great care and caution.

That's when my wife Patricia joined the scene. She was surprised because at first she only saw me from behind. Together we now experienced the slow liberation of the little prisoner. Little by little, the deadly substance was eliminated. How incredibly delicate a butterfly is!

Finally the wing was free. Now the head! Once again I prayed that God would help me not to injure the delicate feelers. The butterfly sensed that it was now a matter of freeing its feeler. And, lo and behold, as if he wanted to help - which was actually the case! – he pushed himself in the opposite direction while I tried to gently pull the thread off. It looked like two people pulling on opposite ends of a rope. Except it was a small feeler that stretched out before our eyes like never before in his life.

Then the last sticky thread came loose! The butterfly was free! But had he remained unscathed? We were very excited. He remained motionless in front of us for just a moment, then rose into the air and fluttered happily away. We were so happy! It was hard to describe.

»Fly well, dear butterfly! God created you wonderfully! He has freed you! May he always keep you!”

“The LORD will fight for you, and you will be quiet” (Exodus 2:14,14).
